Ray Roman, owner of Ray Roman Films, is a highly motivated, self-taught, award winning cinematographer. A search for something to “build a passion for” introduced him to filmmaking. From home movies to well respected and renowned wedding cinematographer, Ray Roman has found a passion for filmmaking and he excels at it. Roman wants the absolute best for his clients; every detail, from movement to look and feel, of the end product has his focused attention.

Ray Roman was a police officer for fifteen years and often wondered if there was something else out there that he could “build a passion for,” much like he did for his police work. One day he decided that he was going to simply transfer some old family video footage of his kids to DVD. He made a visit to a local electronics retail store to purchase an inexpensive transfer mechanism so that he could begin the conversion process. This little piece of equipment also came with a limited version of an editing software program. He imported his family video into the program and thought that what he was creating looked like a movie.

Now, a self-taught home-movie filmmaker turned to internationally renowned award winning cinematographer, Ray Roman is a highly sought after and well respected cinematographer who excels in wedding filmmaking. In 2009 at the 19th Annual International Wedding and Event Video Expo (WEVA), which is the largest convention and trade show for professional videographers, Roman won the coveted and most prestigious Gold Award for Short-Form Wedding Production. This is a form of video production that Roman takes to a level of cinematic experience, think Francis Ford Coppola and The Godfather wedding sequence. In addition to all of this, Roman is also a sponsored shooter for cinema toolmakers, Cinevate.

As you can tell, Roman is a highly motivated individual who wants the best for his clients. He is also in continual pursuit of effective visual communication with a desire to achieve specific looks. He wants, needs all of this packaged in an effective and efficient post-production workflow.

Recently, Roman and company went on a location shoot for a wedding in Greece. According to Roman

“we were looking to achieve a specific look similar to the movie 300 for certain parts. Using Color Fixer Plus and Tint plug-ins, we were able to quickly achieve this look.”

Color Fixer Plus and Tint are both included in the award winning Video Essentials package.

“Not only has NewBlueFX equipped us with an amazing set of tools for post-production, the quick render times have sped up our workflow, which is critical in certain situations such as same day edits.”

Says Ray,

“The best part for us is the ease-of-use. The plug-ins are very intuitive and a few tweaks of the controls allow us to quickly create spectacular looking imagery.”

“NewBlueFX has become a very important part of our post-production workflow. We’ve created and saved custom looks that we are able to quickly apply to our footage to give it that extra ‘punch.’ I can’t see ever using that other program ‘Render Bullet’ again.”

Meet Rusty Rogers, general contractor turned video producer. As the founder of Rusty Rogers Films, he possesses a strong belief that whatever the task, “It’s all about having the right tools for the job.” Rogers takes the responsibility of selecting the right tools for the job very seriously. To this end, he recently selected the picture-in-picture effect bundled in Video Essentials II to help complete a half-hour show for PBS and bring his ideas alive.

Rusty Rogers was once a general building contractor who, over 15 years ago, transitioned out of the construction world and into the world of video production becoming an independent video producer and starting Rusty Rogers Films.

Rusty Rogers

The lessons he learned in the construction business have not been lost in his career move, however. As a general contractor, Rogers learned some valuable lessons but none more so than this:

“A good carpenter can build anything with a dull chisel and a rock; a bad one can ruin a job with a truckload of tools.”

This phrase carried over and translated perfectly into the video production business as well, simply because, as Rogers says:

“It’s all about having the right tools for the job.”

According to Rogers, one major advantage to being an independent producer is that he singularly possesses the authority to choose the “right tools” for the job; tools that will satisfy the customer and conform to his particular workflow, as well as complete the job efficiently, without stifling creativity.

“Typically this means having the ability to change with current video trends… My clients expect it.”

The ability to keep up with current trends and technology is paramount for any video producer and Rogers is no exception.

Since Rogers’ career migration, he has produced programs for his local PBS station in addition to shooting weddings and corporate videos. Most recently, a casual pitch to a local group of professional media associates was presented to and accepted by PBS management. This was a production with a limited budget and small but dedicated crew.

“…there was no money to hire compositors or even spend much time [manipulating] in After Effects.”

For his most recent PBS project, Rogers turned to NewBlueFX Video Essentials II. He expressed that the picture-in-picture effect packaged in this collection was a perfect match and a bargain for the price.

“The show centers around an event with literally hundreds of sub-plots going on simultaneously. My first notion was to use picture-in-picture to convey the idea of many things going on at once but I needed something fresh.”

As a result, Rogers used Video Essentials II Picture-in-Picture in both Adobe’s After Effects and Grass Valley’s EDIUS in order to bring his ideas to life. The following examples (ex.1 and ex.2) show how he used the effect to communicate the lively and diverse activities of the Arts Alive: Second Saturday program for KVIE Public Television.

Rogers further explains,

“My job was to keep a lively pace without going overboard on effects.”

Rogers says Video Essentials II provided a “quick and easy solution for my project that finished ahead of schedule!”

“With an arsenal of NewBlueFX installed on my edit PC I’ve been able to tackle some really challenging projects. Adding a new and unique ‘look’ and flair…I am simply amazed at the level of personal attention given at NewBlue customer support. That kind of dedication will easily win over any customer.”

Most NLE’s support keyframes; however, there have been some limitations to keyframing in the following NLEs: Adobe Premiere Pro, Grass Valley EDIUS, and Corel VideoStudio. NewBlueFX has a free upgrade to the plugins and can be downloaded from http://www.newbluefx.com/downloads.html.

Most NLE’s support keyframes, however some NLEs have limitations, including:

Adobe Premiere Pro: In Adobe Premiere Pro, keyframing and presets are mutually exclusive. As such, we determined which to support on a plugin by plugin basis. For example, if the NewBlueFX plugin benefits more from presets then from keyframing, we chose presets. Please note that this problem does not exist in Adobe After Effects, so full keyframe support is available for all NewBlueFX within Adobe After Effects.

Grass Valley EDIUS: Until now, we did not support keyframing, but, we have good news: We’ve recently upgraded our EDIUS effects with keyframe support. You can download this free upgrade at http://www.newbluefx.com/downloads.html.

Corel VideoStudio: Like EDIUS, we originally did not support keyframing, but have now upgraded our plugins to do so. To get this free upgrade, please download your previously-owned NewBlueFX plugins from http://www.newbluefx.com/downloads.html.
